Facebook is trying to save us all from the embarrassment of our oldest posts. The social network has announced a swathe of new tools designed to hide older posts from your younger self without permanently deleting them.
Facebook says its new ‘Manage Activity’ setting will help people better control their presence on Facebook. In a blog post about the new tools – designed to protect users privacy – Facebook has stated: “We know that people’s posts from years ago may not represent who they are now – e.g. old Facebook statuses from university. This tool lets you move posts you want to hide from others but keep for yourself to an archive and remove posts that you simply want to delete.”
As well as making it easy to hide posts from nosy friends – or potential employers, Facebook is also making it easier for you to unearth older status updates, photos and videos in the first place.
From today, users will be able to filter posts by a person and date range, which will make it easier to go through and quickly curate your old posts.

“We believe people should have the ability to manage and control their data, and we will continue to develop new ways to honour people’s privacy by providing greater transparency and controls,” Facebook added.
The new tools are launching today and will be available via the iOS and Android apps. The lightweight Facebook Lite app, designed to take up less storage on your device and work with slower mobile internet connections for developing countries, will also enjoy the change. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when, or if, it will be available for those logging in via a standard web browser.
Facebook is having a busy few weeks with the firm recently unveiling a brand-new look. The long-awaited redesign went live to users across the globe last month and not only looks different but also brings an improved experience.
Facebook says it has made it easier to find what you’re looking for faster with new streamlined navigation. That means it should be quicker to find videos, games and Groups plus page transitions now load faster. Users can also switch on Dark Mode which reduces the glare of the screen which is ideal for those who enjoy a bit of Facebook at night.
Finally, it’s now easy to create Events, Pages, Groups and ads on Facebook plus you can preview a new Group you’re starting in real-time, and see what it looks like on mobile before you create it.
