Android, Gmail and Google Home fans will definitely want to pop this date from Google in their diaries. The US technology company has just confirmed when its yearly I/O keynotes are taking place and those that want to know what big new features are inbound should make sure they tune in from May 18 to May 20. Although I/O is mainly focused on the developer community it’s also where Google often announces new features coming to its Android operating system.

This year we are expecting the US firm to reveal more details on its upcoming Android 12 smartphone upgrade along with updates to its suite of apps such as Gmail, Google Meet and Docs.

There could even be some surprise hardware news including the launch of a new smartphone and updates to its popular Home smart speakers.

Back in 2019, Google used I/O to reveal its Pixel 3A and Nest Hub Max so there’s no reason why it might not offer some similar news and product updates next month.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said “…and we’re back:) Join us May 18-20 for #GoogleIO live, online, and free for everyone.” As that tweet reveals, this year’s I/O will be an online-only showcase rather than the usual people-packed events Google held prior to the pandemic.

The Covid health crisis actually forced Google to cancel last year’s I/O so this will be the first time we’ve seen the firm announce live news in two years.

“We love bringing our developers together each year at WWDC to learn about our latest technologies and to connect them with Apple engineers,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations and Enterprise and Education Marketing. “We are working to make WWDC21 our biggest and best yet, and are excited to offer Apple developers new tools to support them as they create apps that change the way we live, work, and play.”

Along with revealing changes coming to its devices, it’s possible we could get a first glimpse at new hardware including Apple’s long-rumoured VR glasses and new iMac design. A new iPhone SE, updated iPad Pro and AirPods 3 could also be announced during the conference.
