UPDATE: Blizzard has revealed a new Overwatch Anniversary skin ahead of the 2020 event’s release on Tuesday, May 19, 2020.
Among the new cosmetic items being offered during the three-week celebration is the Legendary Submarine Wrecking Ball skin, which makes Hammond look very suave.
ORIGINAL: The Overwatch Anniversary event for 2020 will be kicking off this week and Blizzard has already started sharing its new event skins. There have only been a couple of reveals so far but it appears that Overwatch’s fourth Anniversary will include plenty of new and returning content. New cosmetic items will be arriving in loot boxes while older designs will also be making a return.
That’s without mentioning all the seasonal arcade brawls that will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
And the good news is that the development team behind the hit shooter has already confirmed its launch plans across all platforms.
WHEN IS THE OVERWATCH RELEASE DATE AND ANNIVERSARY SCHEDULE?
Blizzard has confirmed that the Overwatch Anniversary 2020 release date has been set for Tuesday, May 19, 2020.
The development team has not confirmed what time the new Overwatch event will start but we can have a pretty good guess.
Blizzard has chosen to launch most of its most recent events by 7pm GMT, so we would expect an update around this time on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
As mentioned above, several Overwatch Anniversary skins have been revealed so far by Blizzard.
A legendary Dragoon Mercy outfit has been confirmed, as has Huitzilopochtli Zenyatta, Masquerade Reaper, and Little Red Ashe.
A leaked list also includes Carbon Fiber Sigma, Fleur de Lis Widowmaker, and Masked Man McCree.
Early patch notes also confirm that improvements to the Communication Wheel should be going live alongside the event.
“We have added many more communication options so you can customize your interactions in Overwatch,” the PTR description reads.
“To help you pick your favorites, go to Options -> Controls and scroll down to the Communication Wheel section.
“From here, you can choose from one of 26 different options for each sector of the wheel. You can change out your choices and swap around their positions within the wheel. Now, you can still tell your team “I Need Healing,” but you can also tell them you are “On My Way” so they should “Press the Attack!”
“New options are now available to customize the Communications Wheel, Shortcuts are now customisable; pick from a set of 26 different communication options, and additional keybindings are available to support more voiceover lines.”
The Overwatch Anniversary event is set to launch on May 19 and will run for around three week on all platforms.
The official Overwatch end date has been set for June 9 and could be one of the last major events for the game in 2020.
Others will come but it’s unclear how the ongoing development of Overwatch 2 will affect things.
A message from last year’s event adds: “Along with a slew of new skins, highlight intros, emotes, and sprays, Anniversary Loot Boxes have a chance to contain items from past Anniversary and seasonal events.
“Each purchase of the 50 Anniversary Loot Boxes bundle also includes a bonus Legendary Anniversary Loot Box containing at least one legendary item.
“In addition to earning Anniversary Loot Boxes by playing or purchasing them in the shop, unlock one Legendary Anniversary Loot Box just for logging in.”
More Overwatch event news is expected to be shared by Blizzard in the coming days.
