Sky has quietly extended the availability of its speedy 145Mbps full-fibre broadband package. Originally only available as a small pilot scheme for a handful of customers – who had to order the “Ultrafast” broadband bundle over the phone, no less – the monthly fibre plan is now available to more people. And not only that, but it’s available to order online too.
Internet-obsessed blog ISPreview spotted the change, which was quietly rolled out under the radar by satellite broadcaster Sky. The small pilot scheme of the full-fibre broadband plan kickstarted back in June 2020 using next-generation cabling from Openreach. Openreach currently supplies full-fibre, which offers faster download and upload speeds than traditional copper cables – not to mention more reliable connections, to some three million homes.
By March 2021, Openreach plans to reach 4.5 million premises and 20 million by the time the “mid to late 2020s” roll around. That’s good news for existing Sky broadband customers who are struggling to work, study, or binge boxsets at home right now.
According to ISPreview readers, Sky seems to have slightly refined its full-fibre offering. In the pilot scheme, Sky was offering its full-fibre internet for £39 a month. However, that has now dropped to a more competitive £35 a month.
Although, it’s worth pointing out that this rises to £44 a month after the initial 18-month contract.
Since it’s still really early days for the full-fibre broadband plan, Sky tells customers that prices could continue to fluctuate during the 18-month period. As it’s not a fixed price plan, those who sign-up now could face heftier costs on the horizon. Equally, the converse could be true. One reader reporting to ISPreview revealed they had been quoted a £27 a month price point for the same 145Mbps full-fibre broadband package.
As you’d expect, the latest “Ultrafast” broadband plan from Sky comes with unlimited usage, so you won’t have to worry about unexpected bills after an extended boxset binge on Netflix. New customers will also receive the latest broadband hub for more reliable connections to more devices.
